Standard ─Measuring for Mankind─

Photo

Just as the varves of Lake Suigetsu paved the way for accurate age determination, so has human race continued to make efforts to obtain “accurate scales” and “common rules” of measurement. This section shows you not only the significance and history of measuring things but also various kinds of precious measures such as a duplicated Qin Shi Huang box which the first Qin Emperor in China determined as the standard of quantity, a measure which was acknowledged by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, a prominent military commander in the Period of Warring States, when he unified the whole country, a duplicated basic box used as the measuring standard, etc. We also exhibit measures for age determination other than varves such as ice, rings of trees, etc.

  • Exhibition of precious measures with historical value was realized thanks to the cooperation of Toyo Measurement equipment History Museum in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture.
